El Búho Eatery

Located in the historic Colonial City of Santo Domingo, El Buho Eatery is a restaurant with a warm, celebratory gathering space that captures the spirit of romance in its fully restored XVI century setting. Serving loyal locals, artists, actors, musicians and first time visitors since 2018.

A historical location

The building housing El Búho Eatery was commissioned by then Governor Cristóbal de Ovalle in 1585 to serve the colony as a stable and housing for its workers. Adjacent to the property where the two story structure now stands was a pasture that stretched all the way to the protective wall in front of the sea. Within months after the building was completed the city of Santo Domingo was sacked by the English Pirate Sir Francis Drake. Drake’s First Lieutenant Christopher Carleill occupied the property as his residence during the 3 day siege.

The name El Búho precedes the restaurant when during restoration of the property in 2006 a Burrowing Owl appeared and took up residence in the yard and tree behind the house and thus the name El Búho came to be.
